Ahh, #selfcaresunday... The one day of the week where there are no pressures or schedules or time constraints. It's time to remove "should" from your language on Sunday's and bring back the sacred time you owe to yourself.
Self-care Sunday can be anything you want! That's the most amazing thing about it! It can be a walk along the beach and reading your favourite book if that brings you joy. It can also be cooking your favourite meal and watching Netflix all day.
This is the day to allow your mental and physical body to heal and prepare for the upcoming week. Let yourself have what it needs to do this.
So...to help you find what you need, I have created a list of 30+ ideas for your self care Sunday routine!
Self Care Sunday List
DON'T SET YOUR ALARM
Draw your curtains so the room is dark in the morning. Keep the room at a good sleep temperature (anywhere between 15 to 22 degrees Celsius or 60 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit), is the optimum temperature for sleep. What I find helps me have a good sleep is a bath the night before and adding lavender essential oil to my Saje diffuser.
BRING BREAKFAST BACK TO BED
Find a good movie to watch, grab a good book and enjoy a good snuggle kind of morning.
MAKE AN EPIC SUNDAY BREAKFAST
Cook up your favourite breakfast foods. Mine is traditional with tofu scramble, sausages, hash browns, fruit and pancakes (my mouth is watering just thinking about it!) LOL!
DRINK TEA IN THE SUNSHINE AND READ
Sit in the sunshine with a piping hot cup of tea and a good book. Don’t forget to have a cute teapot on hand for extra tea top ups!
SUNDAY MORNING YOGA
Nothing can kickstart your self care Sunday like a stimulating yoga routine first thing in the morning.
SUNDAY MOVIE MARATHON
Make it extra fun with a theme! You could watch your favourite classic movies, Disney movies, or superhero movies, for example.
DEEP CLEAN YOUR BEDROOM
Create the ultimate sleeping sanctuary for the week ahead. Wash your bed sheets, sort your laundry, tidy up your closet, vacuum your floor, open up your curtains and windows and diffuse some lavender or eucalyptus oil for a relaxing, refreshing and cleansing scent.
PAMPER YOURSELF WITH A BEAUTY DAY
Run a detox bath with Epsom salts or take an aromatherapy shower with some eucalyptus and lemongrass oils, light some pretty candles, crank the music, sip mint and cucumber water and lavish yourself with DIY beauty treatments.
UNLEASH YOUR INNER CHILD WITH COLOURING
Grab some coloured pencils (or get fancy with some watercolour pencils), a few adult colouring books(or kids‘ ones, who’s judging! LOL!), and spend the afternoon mildly meditating as you create your own masterpieces.
TAKE A SUNDAY NAP
Keep it to 15-20 minutes to avoid waking up feeling groggy and unrefreshed (set a timer or an alarm). Keep the room at a comfortable temperature, draw the curtains, and snuggle under your comfiest blanket.
START OR WRITE IN A GRATITUDE JOURNAL
Think back on the week that has just passed. Write down the blessings, the moments or the people or things you were grateful for.
CREATE A CHEERFUL SUNDAY MUSIC PLAYLIST
Listen to it all day. Better yet, crank it up full blast and dance around!
Make up a big batch of cookies, cupcakes or make your own creation!
Turn off your phone, don’t check your email, don’t check social media, and don’t answer the door. Keep the day just for you.
TAKE YOUR DOG FOR A WALK
One of the things I do regularly with Elsa is take her for a walk in the morning and it really sets the day. Take a route you don’t usually take and soak up the atmosphere and the sunshine.
- GET A MASSAGE
Either book yourself into a spa for the ultimate indulgence, get your significant other to give you one or give yourself one using some coconut oil. Even just a DIY hand and foot massage can feel indulgent and relaxing.
- GO TO BED EARLY
Start your week off the right way with a relaxing early night, even if you go to bed and do some light reading or listen to your favourite music (think ocean sounds) before you get tired.
- ORGANIZE FOR THE WEEK AHEAD
Prepare your outfits and meal prep for the week ahead. Having everything prepared and ready to go will save you time on busy weekdays.
- MEDITATE FOR 5 MINUTES
Light some scented aromatherapy candles, play a relaxing or guided meditation, find a comfortable seat, close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Doing this for just five minutes can have a profound benefit on your productivity, mood and anxiety levels.
- DIY MANI/PEDI
Scrub your hands and feet with a scented scrub, slather with a moisturizing cream and paint in a pretty shade.
DRINK LOTS OF TEA
For a wake up call, drink turmeric which has anti-inflammatory benefits. By mid-morning, drink green tea for a metabolism boost. In the afternoon, drink black tea which will give you a boost of energy and focus. Before bed, drink chamomile to calm and relax you before retiring to sleep.
HAVE A SNUGGLE ON THE COUCH
Snuggle under your fluffiest, comfiest blanket on the couch with your husband, your pets and/or your kids and do nothing but watch movies, binge Netlix or read.
- PLAN OUT YOUR DREAM HOME/VACATION ON PINTEREST
Design your dream home from floor to ceiling, or pin pictures/travel guides for all the places you would go if you had an unlimited budget, just for fun!
- CATCH UP ON LAUNDRY
This way, there’s no more getting caught at 8 pm without socks or undies for the next day LOL!
- LIGHT SOME INCENSE
Make your whole home smell like a tranquil sanctuary.
- SAY "NO"
Say “no” to doing anything today that doesn’t light you up or excite you.
- HAVE A CRAFT/HOBBY DAY
Create a favourite craft/hobby or take up a new one that you’ve always wanted to try. I love painting in the kitchen with Brandon! We look up inspiration on Pinterest and go from there!
Declutter and/or redecorate a small section of your home that you’ve been meaning to tackle. Set a timer for 10 minutes and see how much you can get done!
SHOW YOUR VEHICLE SOME LOVE
Give the exterior a good wash and clean out/vacuum the interior. Add a Saje Car Diffuser to infuse your vehicle with your favourite diffuser blend!
CATCH UP ON YOUR FAVOURITE BLOGS
Get caught up with the latest from your favourite blogs. I love getting inspiration from Jillian Harris Blog, Fraiche Nutrition, I Like Her Style Vancouver and Everything Meli.
PLAY A BOARD GAME
Play with your significant other, family or a close friend or two (break out the wine and appies!). My faves? Clue (I have to be Miss Scarlett), Monopoly and Cards Against Humanity for lots of devilish belly laughs.
- TAKE YOURSELF ON A "ME DATE"
Taking yourself on your perfect date is fulfilling and liberating! I love to take myself shopping, treat myself to some sweets, a bouquet of my favourite flowers, watch a funny movie and then relax in a warm bath.
- ORDER TAKEOUT
Roll out a picnic blanket, plop some throw cushions on your living room floor and have an indoor picnic in front of the TV.
- DO A BIG JIGSAW PUZZLE
When you’re done, carefully slide some poster board behind it, glue each piece down with glue and frame it for artwork!
- WRITE YOURSELF A LOVE LETTER
Seal it with a kiss. Stick it in your journal to read through when you need some cheering up.
DO A SOCIAL MEDIA WIPE
Unfollow or block toxic people/pages from your social media news feed for an instant weight off your shoulders.
BUY YOURSELF A BOUQUET OF PRETTY FLOWERS
Buy them with blooms still closed and notice them opening throughout the week. Add a teaspoon of sugar to the water and give the stems a trim every few days to help them last longer.
- SERVE A LITTLE ROMANCE FOR DINNER
Cook a romantic candlelit dinner either for you and your spouse or just for you. Sometimes, I like to do daughter dates and I'll do dinner for just Elsa and myself and it's so nice!
- TWO WORDS: BLANKET FORT
Build the epic blanket fort of your dreams and hide in there all day.
- TREAT YOURSELF
Treat yourself to a beauty treatment like getting your hair done or having a facial!
- AVOID EXCESSIVE STIMULATION TODAY
Just for today, steer clear of bright light, large groups of people, lots of social media and loud noises (especially if you’re introverted).
Pull some weeds, rake some leaves or start a little veggie patch.
TAKE YOUR TIME IN A COFFEE SHOP
Ideally, it should be a coffee shop with big plushy couches. Read a book or the newspaper and take all morning or afternoon to drink your coffee.
- WATCH THE NIGHT SKY
Bask in the moonlight and observe the stars. See if you can name the constellations (or make up your own names for them).
- REAP THE BENEFITS OF AROMATHERAPY
Add some lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus oils to your diffuser to pep you up, or lavender, rose and ylang ylang for calm. Or, get your manifestation vibes high by lighting a scented candle that takes you back to your favourite place, allowing you to recall your fondest memories.
- OBSERVE THE BEGINNING/END OF DAY
There’s always something spectacular and spiritual about a sunrise or a sunset. Depending on your preference, watching a sunrise can be the perfect way to begin your Sunday morning or alternatively, watching a sunset can be the perfect way to cap off your Sunday evening.
MAKE YOURSELF A FANCY DRINK
Try your hand at making a Unicorn Lemonade or a Galaxy Milkshake!
Perform a random act of kindness for someone in your community.
- SIT IN NATURE FOR THE AFTERNOON
Peace out in a botanic garden, forest or by the ocean (I love to get near a natural water source) and do absolutely nothing else.
- INDULGE YOUR LOVE OF COFFEE
Buy a gourmet blend, sit on your porch and drink bottomless cups.
- TRANSPORT YOURSELF TO CHILDHOOD
Wake up early, pour yourself a bowl of cold cereal, put on TV and watch cartoons. Bugs bunny is my favourite!
- LOOK IN THE MIRROR AND DECLARE 10 THINGS YOU LOVE ABOUT YOURSELF
Start each affirmation with “I love my..”. Write them on Post-Its and stick them to your mirror to remind yourself about your wonderful qualities. Work on your goals, love yourself along the way and be happy now!
- TAKE A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE
Look back on fond memories – better yet, sort through them and scrapbook them!
No matter what you choose to do, remember that it's important to take time for yourself. What did you do off the list?
